What We Do and How

GSL Mission Statement

To promote, participate, and sponsor companion animal sterilization campaigns throughout Baja California, Mexico.

To share our knowledge and experiences of Efficient Spay/Neuter techniques with veterinarians in the communities of Mexico.

To educate the families and children about animal welfare and sterilization as the solution to over-population of companion animals.

How we do it…

Sterilization Campaigns Thanks to volunteers and donors on both sides of the border, the Give Some Life Foundation is able to conduct monthly campaigns in Rosarito, Tecate, and Tijuana. During the past year, campaigns have also been held in Mexicali, Ensenada, Los Cabos, Nogales, San Luis Rio Colorado, Colonet, Vicente Guerrero, and La Mision.  The Mobile Animal Spay/neuter Hospital (MASH) allows travel to remote communities that would otherwise not have access to quality, low cost  spay and neuter. Low cost clinics operate daily in Rosarito and weekly in Tijuana. In April 2010, GSL hosted an International Companion Animal Over-Population Forum at the Rosarito Beach Hotel and held a spay/neuter campaign under a tent on the hotel grounds.

Share knowledge and experiences of Efficient Spay/Neuter techniques. Joaquin Villasenor, MVZ and Rebeca Serrano, MVZ,  willingly share tips and techniques tailored to the specific needs of poor and remote communities of the world. Their efficient spay/neuter methodology has been tested, perfected and proven over the past 10 years.  Hundreds of local veterinarians and students have had the opportunity to participate in hands-on GSL training which employs commonly available surgical materials, an easily administered low cost anesthesia ‘cocktail’, and a process which allows maximum results in minimum time.  Unlike other volunteer organizations that come to do spay/neuter surgeries, GSL guarantees that the local veterinarians are left with a repeatable, economical, and efficient process to ensure population control can and will continue long after they are gone.

Educate families and children – Each and every campaign provides the opportunity for the local community to learn more about animal welfare and the benefits of the spay or neuter process, for their animals, and their neighbors.  The children are given a chance to view an actual surgery, to ask questions, and to participate in the recovery process with their pet. Written materials, DVDs and posters help to explain how the numbers of hungry, diseased, and homeless animals are reduced; and how the public health of the communities and neighborhoods can be improved. People are happier; the dogs and cats are healthier; and children are learning by example. Everyone wins.
